Krav Maga and Self Defense Blog/Profiles/Profiles in Krav Maga: Marcus Torgerson

Marcus Torgerson is an accomplished martial artist with over 4 decades of experience. In 1979, at the age of 10 he started what would be the beginning of his martial arts career, training in the more traditional art forms such as Kung Fu and Karate.

In 2005, Marcus began his Krav Maga training in Vancouver, Canada. Though he was getting fit, the training at this particular school wasn’t what he was looking for.

After some online research, Marcus came across the IKMF (International Krav Maga Federation) and started a conversation with Eyal Yanilov. From here, he attended a seminar in San Diego where he was put in contact with Avi Moyal, the Canadian Representative for IKMF.

Marcus then flew to Montreal to meet Avi, though his interests was just to train with IKMF, he learned that he needed to become an instructor first. This is where he became the new IKMF Rep for Canada and was sent to Israel for instructor training. Through this training Marcus became the only non-Israeli member of the Global Instructor Team (GIT) for IKMF.

This training allowed Marcus to step down from his role as the Canadian IKMF Rep so that he could focus on training and certifying other IKMF instructors.

At the level of Expert Level 3, he is one of the most versatile GIT Instructors.

Currently Marcus travels across the globe and provides training for:

Individual and Group Violent Encounter Survival Training

Providing civilian, law enforcement, and military organizations with custom self-defense training so that they can survive and thrive during a violent encounter.

Hand-to-Hand Combat Training for Athletes

Training amateur and professional athletes on hand-to-hand fighting strategy, including balance management, grappling skills (both offensive and defensive techniques), and stamina.

Child, Youth, and Female Self-Defense Training

Marcus knows first hand the importance of confidence and the ability to protect oneself. He is passionate about educating children and women on how they can protect themselves from those that prey on the perceived weak.

Self-Defense Training for Those With Challenges

Providing workshops for people with physical and mental disabilities. While training builds their skills to save themselves, workshops also boost self esteem which decreases the number of people who become victims.

Marcus is trained to recognize physical and mental challenges, analyze them and adapt techniques to offset any limitation.

His motto: It’s not about what you can’t do, it’s about what you can do.

Marcus has also been featured in the iconic book 100 Deadly Skills – A Navy Seals Guide to Crushing Your Enemy, Fighting for Your Life, and Embracing Your Inner Badass>, written by retired Navy Seal Clint Emerson.

In the book, Marcus is featured kicking Hitler’s ass while teaching the readers about situational awareness, a range of combatives from Palm-Heel Strikes to groin kicks and self defense techniques like escaping a bear hug, stopping knife attacks and disarming the opponent. This is a must read for any Krav enthusiast!!
